Chapter Eighteen

In a flash they landed just outside Dion’s house. Pippa nearly stumbled on the solid ground since it had been rumbling under her feet so much in the Fairy Forest. Her brother stood beside her, and Pan framed her other side as her father remained across from her with his arms crossed, assessing the situation. A bright red sky, the kind Pippa used to see during wildfire season in California, hung above them, and a few singed trees and cars that looked like they’d burst open lay sideways or fallen over. The grass was brown, but fire was not falling from the sky, and nothing was burning at the moment.

“Maybe when Silenus left he took the fire with him,” Eros said what they were all thinking.

“Why aren’t we inside? Why did we land here?” Pippa frantically asked, looking at the ground around her father’s house.

“I thought that’s where we were going,” her father said, looking to the house that appeared exactly as they’d left it, a broken-down shack that was a trick of the light.

“Did Niomi and Relius fix the fire?” Pippa asked. “No, they couldn’t have, that’s not how they work, it must have been Silenus’ leaving.”

“He’s not that powerful, he can’t maintain anything when he travels between worlds,” Eros added. “At least that’s my guess, I’ve never seen this before.”

“We have to get to Pippa’s aunt, maybe she’d be safer in the Land of the Fairies,” Pan said.

Screeching came from the shack and Pippa ran to the front door. She pulled hard on the metal handle, but it wouldn’t budge. “Do you have a key?” Pippa asked her father. He dug into his pocket and handed her a small metal key. This shack didn’t look like it needed a lock but sure enough, there was a tiny, rusted keyhole about the size of a pea. Pippa pushed the key in the lock, it went in, but the door wouldn’t budge. She tried again. She pulled frantically on the handle until she slipped back. “Help me!” she cried. Her brother approached and gently took the key from her shaking hands as intensified, high-pitched screeching came from the windows of the shack. A gurgling noise joined the shrieks until hissing accompanied the noises like a horrible symphony. “Help her!” Pippa cried, shaking now.

Her brother gently placed the key in the lock and tried to open the door. When it wouldn’t budge, he tried harder. Finally, Pippa pushed her brother out of the way and started banging on the door. “Let us in! Let us in!” she shouted, as if that could help. A force, like a gust of wind that had taken on the physical properties of a brick wall, blew at Pippa, knocking her back. It felt like a slap in the face when she landed a foot from the door, her head and arms sore.

Pan rushed to help her up, but the moment she was on her feet, Pippa charged the door again. She cried out from her gut something, words, phrases, even she didn’t understand.
